VISAS FOR ITALY (WHO NEEDS A VISA?)

Information on visas are available on the website: http://vistoperitalia.esteri.it.

BOOKING

Visa applications are accepted ONLY by prior appointment (booking can only be made via the "Book an appointment" link). There is no charge for this service.

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO HAVE A VISA APPOINTMENT BOOKED ON OUR ONLINE SYSTEM, BEFORE MAKING YOUR TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS.

Please note:  visa appointments can be booked ONLY via the Booking online system (not through the Consulate) and ONLY on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between 2pm and 4pm.

IMPORTANT:  from 20/11/2015 in order to implement the Visa Information System (VIS) - - a key element for exchanging visa data between Schengen States -  applicants  need to appear in person for the collection of the biometric data: ten fingerprints and a photograph are collected from persons applying for a visa. However, for subsequent applications within 5 years, fingerprints can be re-used from the VIS file unless there is reasonable doubt regarding the identity of the applicant.
When the visa holder arrives at the external border, the border authorities have access to the VIS to verify his or her identity and the authenticity of the visa.

Certain categories of applicants are exempt from the requirement to give fingerprints, including:

·         children under the age of 12;

·         persons for whom fingerprinting is physically impossible.

HOW TO BOOK AN APPOINTMENT

GENERAL INFORMATION

The "Schengen States" are: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

Be advised that a Schengen visa does not guarantee the entry clearance into the Schengen Area. The final decision belongs to the Authorities at the Border of entry.

Before submitting an application make sure you are entitled to do so, as the administrative visa fee is not refundable.

·         The visa must be requested in the country of residence;

·         The visa application has to be presented to the Visa Section of the country of main destination, which is dependent upon the purpose of the journey and the length of stay. If your main destination cannot be ascertained, the Schengen country through which you first enter is responsible for granting the visa.

·         The passport or official travel document has to be:

- recognised by all of the Schengen member states

- issued no more than 10 years ago (older passport will not be accepted)

- valid at least three months beyond the return date of your trip

- with at least 2 blank adjacent pages left;

·         you can apply for a visa only if your trip is within the following three months;

·         you are requested to submit proof of your residence in the UK – and specifically in the jurisdiction of the Consulate General (Scotland & Northern Ireland). At the time of application your UK permit must be either indefinite or have a validity of at least 3 months beyond the expiry date of your requested visa;

·         holders of a UK C-visit visa are not eligible to apply

·         The Schengen visa allows the holder to move freely in all the Schengen countries, within the validity of the visa. If your passport or travel document is valid only for certain Schengen States then the validity of your visa is restricted to those States.

PLEASE NOTE: Family members of a national of an European Economic Area country who hold a Residence Card issued by the UK authorities,  do not need a visa to enter Italy if travelling with/joining  the EEA family member in Italy ( EU Directive 2004/38/CE, as implemented by  Italian law no. 30 of 6/02/2007).

The UK Residence Card must bear the following  specific wording:
"RESIDENCE DOCUMENTATION

Type of Document:  Residence Card of a Family Member of an EEA National"

You will need a visa if any other different wording from the above appears on your UK Residence Documentation/Permit.

Please note:  The holder of the “RESIDENCE CARD OF A FAMILY MEMBER OF AN EEA NATIONAL”  travelling ALONE (i.e. without the Italian or EEA national) must submit all the required documents as an ordinary applicant and will be subject to the appropriate visa fee.

It should be noted that Border Police always have the right to request further documentation in support of your entry into the  Schengen Area.

Bringing a copy of marriage certificate or proof of relationship is advisable.

Please be advised that any dispute/complaint must be resolved directly with the Italian Home Office – P.zza del Viminale 1 – ROMA tel. 064651.
